No.30 Loading Gauges (from Ratio Kits)

I needed a self contained task so this week I have been making up a batch of Ratio Loading Gauges of the GWR and GWR/LMS varieties:



The kits are relatively straightforward and I fixed them together using Butanone solvent.  The kits do however contain two different diameters of plastic ‘rod’ with the suggestion that the smaller rod can be used to make up the rigging for the operating mechanism.

However it seems to me that if the rigging is to be fitted then there is a pulley missing from the kits.

It didn’t take much thought to realise that a suitable pulley could be cut from the spare plastic sprue (actually by my wife who fished the bits of surplus plastic out of the kitchen waste bin).

There are some useful drawings and pictures available in my favourite GWR reference book (A pictorial record of Great Western Architecture, A Vaughan (1977), Oxford Publishing Company, pp373-375).  The pictures appear to show the rigging made from white rope, with the separate lengths from the opposite sides of the loading gauge joined together prior to passing over the corner pulley.

No. 163 Hornby’s new A2/2 and A2/3

Coming from the North East of England I couldn’t let these new Hornby models pass me by.    Thane of Fife had already disappeared from my 1960 ABC books and I never got to see Cock o’ the North.   There is a big red line through the number in my book, confirming its imminent withdrawal.   I did see the two A2/3s, Steady Aim being a York engine whilst around the beginning of the sixties Sun Castle was based at New England and then Doncaster. Thane of Fife after some adjustment to sand boxes and running plate Steady Aim after some adjustment to the speedometer bracket I hadn’t pre-ordered any of these Hornby models and was initially only interested in the two Late Crest engines.    The two Early Emblem engines were bought as an afterthought with some surprise earnings. All the models I have handled have run very well.   With some notable exceptions the models are also very impressive.   This Post summarises various issues (and fixes) that I have come across with these models.

No. 166 A tale of two Hornby Super Detail ‘Britannias’, plus a Clan (Postscript)
