No.4 Diamond Crossing or Single Slip

Progress with the ballast on the mainline:


As originally constructed the exit from the goods yard / station was a simple diamond crossing with dead frogs:

This was then changed for a single slip.  The switched frogs give excellent running characteristics.  However the rather abrupt 'turn left' is too tight for some engine / tender combinations and is in restricted use.

 
The change from 'diamond' to 'single slip' required the insertion of a new 'pink button' on the control panel to operate the 'turn left' solenoids.  The original 'straight across mode' being catered for by the existing buttons:

No.98 The Peco Streamline 3 Way Point.

The Peco Streamline 3 Way point is an extremely useful space saving device. This Post is prompted because I had to sort out a couple of problems with the installation of my own three way point. I was also aware that other modellers   were finding difficulties with the operation and installation of their 3 way points. The design of the point is symmetrical and has the appearance of a LH point being placed directly on top of a RH point. As a consequence the construction of the point is quite complex and the point requires careful handling especially during installation. When first marketed by Peco the point was only available with ‘Insulfrog’.  The view below shows my first ‘Insulfrog’ point but reinstalled on my second layout. No.105 City of Truro – a clever design

Flushed with success after fettling Bucklebury Grange I thought I would tackle some of the other unresolved locomotive issues. Bachmann 3440 City of Truro City of Truro arrived from the National Railway Museum in January 2010. I remember being well impressed by the livery and the detail. It ran slowly and smoothly and was carefully put away – too good (expensive) for day to day use. Fast forward to January 2014 and Bachmann’s Dukedog arrives. 9017 was a superb runner, smooth and rock steady. It had me thinking because City of Truro did have a tendency to swing from side to side. I would investigate. Underside of City of Truro The driving wheels on City of Truro are geared to reduce problems with quartering. I did wonder if the driving wheels were not true on their axles.
